Lasithi is the easternmost regional unit of Crete, and for many who discover it, the one that stays with them longest. Where the island's busier western reaches trade in broad resort strips and coach-tour archaeology, Lasithi offers something quieter and more considered: a long, varied coastline that shifts from the sheltered gulf of Mirabello — one of the most dramatic natural harbours in the Aegean — eastwards to wild, sparsely visited capes. The interior rises sharply into the Dikti mountains and the celebrated Lasithi Plateau, where windmills dot a high plain farmed since Minoan times.
The regional capital, Agios Nikolaos, is an attractive harbour town wrapped around a freshwater lake that opens to the sea, lined with good fish tavernas and independent boutiques. A short drive north, Elounda is internationally recognised for its concentration of ultra-luxury resorts clustered around the islet of Spinalonga — the former Venetian fortress and leper colony whose stones carry genuine historical weight. Schisma Eloundas, the small settlement that edges the bay, is where several of our Lasithi guests choose to stay, combining complete seclusion with effortless access to Elounda's restaurants and watersports. Further along the northern coast, the villages of Milatos and the quieter Limnes sit above coves where the water is extraordinarily clear and development has been deliberately restrained.
Malia, on the Lasithi coast closest to Heraklion, is known both for its Minoan palace — one of the three great palatial centres of Bronze Age Crete — and for a long sandy beach that attracts a more lively summer crowd, making it an interesting counterpoint to the reserve of the eastern bays. Across the region, the food reflects Cretan tradition at its most intact: aged graviera from the plateau, wild herbs, slow-cooked lamb and fresh-caught sea bream served at waterfront tables. Our luxury villas in Lasithi are spread across these distinct pockets of the region, offering a private villa with pool experience that ranges from intimate retreats above a quiet cove to spacious properties commanding sweeping views over the Gulf of Mirabello.
One of the Mediterranean's most photographed stretches of water, the Gulf of Mirabello curves around the Elounda peninsula with remarkable clarity and depth. The nearby islet of Spinalonga rewards a morning visit with serious Venetian and Ottoman history.
Beyond the famous islet, the Mirabello coastline rewards slow exploration — small fishing quays, rocky swimming platforms, and tavernas that serve whatever came off the boats that morning. Schisma Eloundas is particularly well placed for combining this coastline with easy access into Agios Nikolaos.
The third-largest Minoan palace on Crete sits directly beside a long sandy beach, making it one of the few places in the world where you can spend an hour among Bronze Age ruins and then swim before lunch. Its famous gold bee pendant was found here.
At roughly 840 metres above sea level, the Lasithi Plateau is a fertile upland basin ringed by the Dikti range, and — according to myth — the birthplace of Zeus. The plateau repays a slow circuit: stone villages, monasteries, and farm stalls selling local honey, cheese and raki.
